Multiple reports have come out that Allen Iverson will formally announce his retirement at the Sixers home opener against the Miami Heat on October 30th.

Iverson last played in the NBA during the 2009-2010 season, where he started off with the Memphis Grizzlies, only to be waived 3 games into the season.  He was then brought back by former Sixers GM Ed Stefanski, playing 25 games (24 starts) for the Sixers before leaving the team in February to attend to his daughters health issues.

The Sixers had a rookie point guard in Jrue Holiday to develop at the time.

Iverson last played professional in Besiktas of the Turkish Basketball League during the 2010-11 season.  He received an offer to play in the D-League last season but turned it down.

Iverson turned 38 this past June.

Iverson will retire with a long list of personal accolades, including rookie of the year in 1997, 11 (consecutive) all-star game appearances, 7x all-nba selections, led the league in scoring 4 times, and appeared in the 2001 NBA finals.

Iverson ranks 2nd in 76ers franchise history in points scored (behind Hal Greer), second in points per game (behind Wilt Chamberlain), 7th in assists per game, second in free throws made, first in three point field goals made, and second in minutes played.  He ranks 6th in 76ers history in Player Efficiency Rating (PER), 6th in offensive win shares, and 6th in win shares generated.

Surprised they are doing it opening night– the Heat game is one that will sell out Because of Lebron/Wade/Bosh, I would wait till the second game of the season.

With the way Iverson’s going, he may retire 4 more times during the course of the season.

Iverson is only 1200 points (give or take) away from becoming the franchise’s all time scoring leader. I know we’ve been down this road before… but, come on, let’s bring him back for old time’s sake. Besides, I feel like this team could use some veteran leadership.
